| In the late 1970s, 80s and early 90s, I grew up on the 5300 block of Bay Ridge Ave., between Birch Ave. and Lexington Blvd, in Whitefish Bay. It was a close-knit community with a small army of kids my age. In the summertime, we’d run outside in the morning and play until dusk – games like strikeout, rumble fumble, pickle and ghosts in the graveyard. When it was time for dinner, my mom would simply hang a red handkerchief off the porch light; I'd see it and head inside. When I look back on those childhood years – from age 1 to age 18 in the same house – mostly what I feel is gratitude, especially for the friendships that still endure today. ...
